8th October - Castle Combe Race:

We were greeted by a glorious sunny day on arrival at the circuit. I was really looking forward to getting out there to qualify although I was still feeling a little nervous. Just as I was about to pull out from the assembly area and onto the track for qualifying, I noticed a red ECU light come on. Terry wasn't sure what this was, but he though that it might be that rev limiter had been activated. the first lap of the circuit proved him absolutely right. Every time I got to 6000RPM, the engine coughed and stuttered. Brilliant, just what I needed at this stage, as if I wasn't already battling with enough problems. After six frustrating laps, I pulled into the pit lane pretty annoyed, as the best time I could do was  1"23secs. I was so cross that I decided I would have to give it one more go, and try to keep the speed up as much as possible in the corners to make up for the lost time in limited revs that were available.

This change in attitude worked pretty well, on the next lap I managed to take nearly 5 seconds off the time, but I still knew I could have been a lot quicker than that.

Never mind, we're on the grid for the race, the ECU is now fixed, and although it was dull, that track was still dry. Famous last words - after 80% of the way round the first lap, the heavens suddenly opened. I could see cars in front of me suddenly start spinning off all over the place. There must have been 7 or 8 cars that came off on Camp Corner. I took my speed right down as I was determined to finish the race and at least get another signature. The rain was incredible and with slicks on the car it was pretty scary.

At one stage just going up Avon Rise, the car in front of me, for no apparent reason, suddenly lost it, span 360°, went off the circuit and into the field beside us, promptly rolling over 2 or 3 times. By now, all I was focused on doing was to keep the car on the black stuff and finish, the weather was so bad that the race was stopped a few laps early, and as it turned out, most of the quick Tuscan drivers had spun off, leaving me in 3rd place! It didn't feel successful, but I was pleased to at least finish, and get my 5th signature towards my national A license.
