9th July - Rockingham Race 2:

I was third on the grid for race two and determined to get a good start in order to try and keep in touch with Tim and Andy for as long as possible. Red lights out and away we go. Marc got a fantastic start and briefly took the lead. Although I got a good start, Graham still got past me and I was down to fifth place rather too quickly. I managed to sneak up the inside of Graham into the first hairpin and keep him at bay as we went through the bend. I now needed to catch Marc quickly as the front runners were disappearing already. I took my chance on lap 2 and was through, and with some clear track was able to push on straight to the 1min 13secs area putting 5-6 seconds gap between me and the others after just a couple of laps. Tim and Andy were nowhere to be seen by now and I was basically racing against myself and the clock. That, together with negotiating various back markers saw my times slip during the middle of the race. Suddenly I could see both Graham and Marc in my mirror, and realised that they were catching me. Time to push on again, and although I quickened up, my grip seemed to be lacking. My tyres must have overheated as the understeer got worse and worse. On the final long left hander of what turned out to be the last lap, I spent most of it on the grass as I just couldn't pull the car around and was conscious of the fast closing Graham behind me. I hung on and took third place again, feeling a little bit disappointed with my performance as I didn't better my times from race one. Its a very physical circuit, and my neck and shoulders were really aching afterwards.

Overall, it was an excellent day with two podium finishes and new experiences gain at a truly remarkable circuit. My thanks to the Team for their hard work and the support from my family- it does make a difference! Bring on Donington Park (V8 Supercars) in three weeks time. I've never raced there before either, so I think a test might be in order.
