18th March - Silverstone Testing (National): |
|
| What a difference a week makes, we couldn't have asked for better conditions, a beautiful sunny day and an 18 ºC temperature. For Silverstone we changed the car's set-up to be much stiffer and put the new slicks on for the first time. So it should be really interesting to see the difference in the car's handling. | ||
| There were just two groups at Silverstone, the first group for open-wheeled cars and the second for all saloons. This meant that there was a huge variation in the cars and their speeds in our group ,for example, the Peninsula Le Mans TVR 440R to a fabulous historic Lister Jaguar to a Ford Fiesta which looked like it had seen better days. The downside of this from our point of view meant that there was quite a lot of slow traffic to have to navigate. | ||
| Once we'd 'broken in' the new tyres, I set out to see just how much grip they and the better weather would give. All was going well until I got my breaking point slightly wrong as I went into Maggots curve and discovered that the set-up was certainly less forgiving. I managed to catch the car before the back end overtook me, squeezing my way through the bend and then safely onto Club Straight. I logged the experience in the brain for future reference! | ||
|
My aim for today apart from avoiding
spinning off and incidents, was to try and achieve a time in the 1 min 05
secs area. This was proven to be quite a challenge because of all of the
slower traffic holding us up at the bends. Indeed I nearly came a cropper
when finding myself sandwiched between 2 cars going through Brooklands and
just managed to hang on whilst touching the gravel on the curve out to
Luffield, almost having my first ever spin off in the racer! In my final
afternoon session, I was determined to try and set my best time. This
became somewhat frustrating as we were having to leave the track every 5
minutes because a car had come off the circuit.
In the end I managed to shave just two-tenths of a second off my best time up until that point ending up with a best for the day of 1 minute and 6.3 seconds. |
