16th September 2005 - Oulton Park Test - On the right track again!:

We stayed overnight at Oulton in what must have been one of the biggest torrential downpours we had ever experienced. This did not bode well for testing.

When we awoke the next morning, it was a miracle, the sun was shining and although the ground was wet, it was likely to dry quite quickly. Ours was the first session out on track and the circuit was still damp, and certainly very green. As a consequence, we took it fairly easily with me still being pretty apprehensive at this stage. We downloaded the info from the P.I. system to see where I was breaking, how much acceleration I was using, where, and so on, to assess where I could gain some time easily. The second session was better with my times consistent around 1 minute 58 seconds. I was disappointed at that because I felt I was really trying herd to get back to speed. It was very frustrating, improving only a little in the next session to 1min 58secs. The data showed that my best theoretical time was 1.5 secs better than this, so I knew I could do it. Every time I felt the back end of the car going a bit, I couldn't stop myself from backing off. I knew I had to keep my right foot planted, but just couldn't bring myself to do it.

This problem carried on with Tim still being positive and supportive all the time. He must have been getting really frustrated though. At least my theoretical best time had improved and was matching my previous PB when I tested here back in July (Pre Crash)!

In the final session, I just had to go for it. We couldn't come away without improving on the time I'd set earlier in a car that arguably wasn't track worthy. Finally, it came together a bit, I felt more confident and comfortable again. And at last managed to take 0.75 secs off my previous best, with a theoretical best lap time 1.5 secs quicker. What a shame I couldn't have done that earlier in the day, but at lest we got there in the end and I feel more confident again ready for the next race at Castle Combe.
