Still feeling fed up with the events
at Oulton park, I decided that I really must take my aggression out on the
circuit and, to quote my Team mate (Tim Hood), should drive with the
attitude of being “King of the track”. Something certainly clicked for me, despite the circuit being a bit greasy, I set a best time of 1min 02.7 secs in qualifying, almost 2 secs quicker than when we tested just 3 weeks ago. Better still, I felt there was more to come and so I was really looking forward to the race. I was determined to get a better start this time and try to keep up with the front runners. I did get away well but so did everybody else. However, as we approached Maggots for the first time, Hugh got things a little wrong and ended up spinning. I managed to get past Dean at the same time and by 3 laps into the race was just about hanging on to the leaders. Suddenly on lap 4 I started to struggle with grip, particularly at Maggots and Luffield. The under steer in a Tuscan at Luffield is bad enough normally but I was really having to work hard just to get the car to turn in! I could see both dean and Hugh catching me at these corners as I slid more and more. I knew it was only a matter of time before they would pass me. Sure enough they did and there was nothing I could do with the lack of grip I had. I was far enough ahead of the rest of the field not to have to worry but once again, albeit for very different reasons, it was going to be another frustrating race with me dropping down for 3rd place to 5th. Once the race finished, it quickly became clear that my nearside front tyre was completely gone and the rears weren’t too good either - hence, no grip. We probably should’ve picked this up at the end of qualifying. Yet another sound lesson learned but still, I’m moving very positively in the right direction.
